Watermen in the first part of the 20th Century and earlier suffered from a variation of tuberculosis called “Oyster Hand”, brought on by not wearing waterproof gloves while dipping hands in ice-cold water all day long. The thousands of tiny cuts caused by the oyster shells developed into lesions that failed to heal.
